September Walk

Race Point to Hatches Harbor

For walk #9 we parked at the National Seashore Visitors Center. The walk from the visitors center to the beach included this ORV access path.
Traffic was continuous. This is the South Access Road to the beach
We get to see a different angle of the lifesaving station.
Arlene crests the dune and after 1.5 miles we are at the beach. This was the first time I used a GPS on our walk. I was a little disappointed at its accuracy because it claimed we walked 12.57 miles. Our walk included numerous stops for picture taking, one lunch break (chicken sandwiches and grapes) and walking on soft sand. Car to car was 2 hours and 45 minutes so although some of the walking was brisk we couldn't have covered that much distance.
The remnants of Hurricane Ivan brought heavy rain and surf yesterday. Today only the surf is left.
The surf left a messy wrack-line
Arlene walks along a wide stretch of beach
At the tip the dune face is cut, but still not tall as you find in Eastham, Wellfleet and South Truro
As it happens twice-a-day, the ocean overtakes the land
Looking back around the sharp bend at the "wrist" of the cape

And we finally reach the Race Point Lighthouse
