North Attleboro Spring Track History
1958                                                    Record 1-3
Captain – none                                    Coach – Reed Morse
Championed by selectman H. Reed Morse and with the approval of the school committee, North Attleboro formed its' first team. There had been concern that the athletic budget would not be able to fund the $200. needed to field a team but eventually the money was found. Morse volunteered to coach the twenty boys who joined. Although their first contest was a 72-5 loss to Durfee, they did manage to win a meet against another first year team, King Philip.

1959                                                   Record 4-4 Overall 5-8
Captain – Stephen Morse                   Coach – Paul Kelley   Assistant – Reed Morse
Sprinter John Perkoski forged the way to an improved season setting records in the 100 yard , 220 yard and long jump. His season-leading 65 points were followed by Stephen Morse (36.5) and Dale Galasso(35.75). Many other records were set and a listing of the transition of records can be found here. North finished the season by scoring 1.20 points in the County Track Meet. Walter Fawcett scored the first ever big meet running points for NA while Richard Lovell scored the other 1/5 of a point with a 5-way tie in the high jump.

1960                                                  Record 5-4 Overall 10-12
Captain – Tom Lorden                      Coach – Paul Kelly   Assistant – Reed Morse
John Perkoski led all scorers for the second straight season. His 78 points made him the first to score over 100 career points. Dale Galasso also chipped in 53. H. Reed Morse proposed a new cinder track at Rose Field. The school committee tabled the proposal with a terse two word comment – no money. Still, 45 hearty souls came out to brave the “practices at rocky Rose Field”. Six of nine records were broken. Richard Lovell improved his own high jump standard and Ray “Corky” Beaupre broke the shot put mark. Competition was against teams unfamiliar to NA today. Case, Sommerset, N. Bedford, Dighton, Durfee, Coyle and Taunton were among their foes.

1961                                                 Record 2 – 5 Overall 12-17
Captain - Don Charron                  Coach Rick Sapienza   Assistant – Reed Morse
In a rebuilding year Fred Stevens (44), Gary Stanford (30), and Don Charron (30) led the scoring. Corky Beaupre extended his shot put record, while Bruce Ryan set a new 100 yd. record and Capt. D. Charron broke the mile record.

1962                                                Record 7-2 Overall 19-19
Captain Bruce Brockway                Coach Tim Rioux          Assistant Reed Morse
New Coach Tim Rioux, sporting a heafty coaching salary of $300 led a young team to a great season. Twenty-two athletes scored points led by Steve Metz (61.5), J. Stafford (48.5), Gary Stanford (47.5) and Roly Robitaille (40.5). Meets such as the Fall River contest showed the adversity teams faced when going on unfriendly turf. Miler Bob St. Pierre sprained his ankle stepping in a hole in lane one, Metz fell but still recovered for 2nd in the 440 and Stanford collapsed in the 880. North upset a strong Coyle team winning in the 4X220yd relay, but fell 38 and 5/6 to 38 and 1/6. Both Art Nunes and Bob Aussant were on the victorious Attleboro relay. Six team records were set.

1963                                                    Record 8-2 Overall 27-21
Captains – Roly Robitaille and Bob Candelet   Coach Tim Rioux  Assistant Reed Morse
Fifty candidates showed up to enjoy another winning season. Steve Metz again led all scorers with 64 points. Pete Federovich (59), Roly Robitaille (43) and freshman Paul Medeiros led he scoring. Medeiros broke the 220yd. dash record clocking a 23.2. North came up just short against Attleboro again, this time losing 39.75 to 37.25 finishing in a dead heat in the last event of the day, the 4X220. Metz has overcome tremendous odds to achieve his success. Having had a tumor removed from his leg in his youth, he is running with one leg shorter than the other. Doctor’s recommended running to help his recovery and recover he has. The leg imbalance also led to a problem with curvature of the spine that prompted a weight lifting program to correct. Metz took all the doctors’ suggestions to the nth degree and is now the premier 440yd runner in the area.

Captain Steve Metz                          Coach Tim Rioux              Assistant Reed Morse
58 candidates came out to keep the winning record alive. They enjoyed their first-ever win against Attleboro, an exciting 39-38 contest. This was the third consecutive year the meet went down to the relay but this time NA stood firm. Controversy surrounded the Coyle Meet. North returned to their bus with two events remaining. As the coaches explained later the atmosphere was getting heated because of a “quick gun” by the Coyle starter and if they remained “there would have been trouble”. North placed second in the County Meet winning the 440yd , 220yd and 4X220yd relay. Paul Mederios led the year’s scoring with a single season record of 92.5 points. Steve Metz chipped in 80 to become the first NA thin clad to score over 200 career points. Metz also became the school’s first state champion winning the Class D 440 in 50.8. The 4X220 also tied for first at 1:34.5. Medeiros, Bill Collins, Lorin Kinney and Metz comprised the team. NA was also second as a team in the Class D meet. Dave Robertson became the new record holder in the javelin.

North went on a nine-meet win streak but lost the last two after an unfortunate spate of injuries

Sprinter Bruce Hayes led all scorers ith 39 points. P. Lewis chipped in with 32, an oft injured Medeiros contributed 31. Gary Budjinski and Curt Estey each added 27.

Paul Norton spun the discus out to 137'5" while Jerry Tenbrinke ran any event from the 200 to two mile and longjumping in the 19' range. Races such as the 70 yard high hurdles and 120 yard low hurdles were still being contested.

Captains                                                     Coach : Mike Pelletier  Assistant John Mitchell

North boasted  well balanced attack with multiple threats in each event except pole vault which they forfeited points until "Cloud Nine" arrived. Steve Robrtson took over this event as well as doing duty in the long jump, javelin and dashes. Dwight Estey set a new high jump record at 6'2" but NA also had Robertson and hurdler, long jumper Rich Fitzpatrick up at the 6' mark. Barry Ryan and Doug Macbeth handled the 400-800 while Steve Andrews, the Wnek brothers Steve and Jeff, and Mike Habershaw led the distance crew. Besides sprints and long jump, Al Berard also broke a long standing javelin record tossing the spear 158'6".

1970                                                                     Record 1-7

Captains :Steve Andrews, Dwight Estey, Barry MacEwen

Coach : Mike Pelletier                                 Assistants : John Mitchell and Reed Morse

North started strong by winning their first meet of the season over Mansfield 77-54. Barry Ryan (Low hurdles-400) and Dwight Estey (100-HJ) were double winners. However the team was unable to win another meet and had to settle for individual accomplishments. Jeff Wnek set a new record in the mile finally getting to remove the name of Jerry Tenbrinke from the board. Rumor has it he still has the old record tags. His brother Steve only fell short of holding his own record when an Attleboro official miscounted laps in the two mile. Wnek finished his 7 laps in 8:44 and the race was stopped early. Estey became the second member of the Century Club(156 pts.) going undefeated in every event he competed from the first meet until state finals. After winning the 100 and HJ in both the South Shore Invitational and Hock Championships, he won the Class B high jump and finished 3rd at state finals.

Dwight Estey clears the bar at 5'11 vs. Attleboro.
