In 1993 the boys cross country team had a great season. The stable of good distance runners continued to run strong during the indoor season as well. Seniors Donnie Weeden, Derek Ellis and Eric Roland teamed with exchange student Emil Larsson to set a school indoor record in the 4X800. Their time of 8:28 was nearly equal to the outdoor record. So when I was picking areas to concentrate on in the State Coaches Invitational I put the three seniors together with sophomore Ethan Estey. They went into the meet with one goal - to break the record. They were barely even considering they would have a chance to place. I was fairly confident we could go 8:20. Eric proceeded to open with a 2:05.2 and Ethan got the baton in a third place pack of runners. After dropping to 5th he proceeded to sprint to a big lead. We held our breath but he held on to run 2:03.2 and only get recaught by Brockton. Derek (2:04.7) and Donnie (2:03.7) held the placea nd this upstart team who didn't even know they were good placed 2nd in 8:16.8. They went on to place second at the State Relays, win the Class B Meet, place 4th in the state finals and go 5th at the New Englands in a school record 8:11.8. It was a fun year made even more so when the perfect group rode a wealth of enthusiasm to a magical season. And it was all so unexpected and new.
