Following the progress of running records has been more difficult than field events. Starting in 1980 some tracks started to convert from yards to meters. In most cases (with the exception of the 100M vs. 100Y) the distances are close and it is fairly easy to determine if the metric mark is superior even though the distance is nominally shorter. When a yard time was tied by a metric time (such as the 400M vs. 440Y) it is listed but is a slightly superior mark. Throughout most of the 80's meets bounced back and forth from metric to yard. Very few yard tracks existed after 1990 although the 1997 state championships in Shrewsbury was a yard track.

Trying to follow hurdle records was even more difficult. The events themselves changed dramatically. Heights of hurdles changed and distances such as the 180yd. low hurdles and the 80 yd. hurdles no longer exist. The present record in the 300M hurdles (36") is still inferior to the 330 yd. (33") hurdle record set in 1980. But since the 33" height is no longer run the old record was retired.
