Never count a team out ahead of time as the 1992 shows.

1992 Comes Through

North Attleboro's 1991 team had everything going for it. The top 8 scorers were seniors and they cruised through the season only once scoring under 100 points. This team that captured the Class C Meet unfortunately left the cupboard nearly bare. 959 points graduated with only 400 returning. Only one returning athlete had scored over 50 points - just barely. So it was pretty much understood that the win streak which stood at 21 would be ending. Things looked a little brighter when Sweedish exchange student Mats Lindskog showed up. 59 athletes came out for the team and they suddenly started to gell. Stoughton was the first big challenge. Going into the final relay North was up by three but when Mats got the baton to anchor he was nearly 40M down to a vry good runner. He barely made up any ground until coming around the final corner he started to get nearer. With the track lined on both sides with cheering fans from both teams jumping up and down he captured the lead with 20M left and won the meet. Against powerhouse Mansfield he repeated the trick, making up a large deficit to win the meet in the relay. North went on to win all 10 of their meets and the league championship. But it asn't just the Mats show. Five athletes who had never been stars scored over 100 points. Led by State shot put champion Marc Lefebvre the remainder of the group were Dan Feid, Mats Lindskog, Joe "Tex" Brauninger and Keith Austin. Also thrown in the mix were the two high scoring freshman Phil Allessi and Ethan Estey who set freshman records and played critical roles all year. It was a team effort that also proved you can never predict. We had graduated too much and  the league was too strong but no one told them that and they continued the tradition of winning in the toughest of years.
