State Coaches Invitational

Boys

Saturday

I don't get it. This looks nothing like the results I saw head-to-head during the season. Not to worry. It will all work itself out on the track. Look for a comparison of seed times vs., results on Tuesday. One thing for sure – this will start to get a handle on what will happen at Hocks. I'm not very confident that anyone will place unless Brady Shorey is healthy. And since Alex Witkus is always on his tail, Alex could be swept into the finals as well.

600M Run

Ben Dubuc is a senior. Before he's a “has-Ben” its time for him to dig a little deeper to find an extra gear. He's only .77 off the top-seed. Maybe some raw meat the night before to bring out the tiger in him. (Disclaimer: The Illinois Department of Public Health advises that eating raw or undercooked meat, poultry, eggs or seafood poses a health risk to everyone, but especially to the elderly, young children under age 4, pregnant women and other highly susceptible individuals with compromised immune systems. Thorough cooking of such animal foods reduces the risk of illness.

Matt Hernon is only three seconds off the top seed-time. Shayne Collins expects to work with him to put two green shirts on the Award Stand. Christian Bates had a solid Championship season last spring and could also make noise here.

Two Mile

Mild-mannered Nick O'Leary has to slip into a phone booth and change into his superman costume before the race. If he does that – he strikes a blow for truth, justice and the North Attleboro way. If he competes as Clark Kent – ouch. Expect Nick to continue his breakthrough season.

Top seed = 10:10.00

8   O'Leary, Nick    JR No Attleborough     10:13.30

Top seed = 8.18

Mike Cardarelli won the luck of the draw by just missing Sunday's meet. He'll clean up Saturday by sweeping his way to the podium. This is another huge event for Hock athletes. I'll know a lot more about my Hock Championships prediction after this one.

1   Cardarelli, Mike JR Foxborough              8.18

13   Ferreira, Ted     JR Mansfield               8.30

24   Blelloch, Nicholas    SO Oliver Ames             8.42

High Jump

When you funnel off every jumper who has cleared 6'1” or better, you are left with a field where anyone can place. Connor Richardson has been jumping consistently high at Reggie so he's in the best spot to capitalize.

Top seed = 6:00.75

1   Richardson, Tristan JR No Attleborough      6-00.75

McLaughlin, Shawn   SR Foxborough           5-10.00

Ross, Dan          JR Foxborough           5-10.00

Total jumpers = 74

Long Jump

Who knows? Very few jumpers get to practice this event in the winter. An edge goes to Patrick Grealey who is close to the top distance in the field – and he gets legitimate practice time at Wheaton.

Top Seed = 19'6”

22   Greaney, Patrick JR Mansfield           19-03.00

32   Donahue, Greg     SO Mansfield           19-01.25

43   Cabao-an, Lester JR Foxborough          19-00.00

45   Burwell, Grant    SR No Attleborough     19-00.00

Total jumpers = 49

Shot Put

Top seed = 45'8”

Zach LaClair is ever-so-close to a medal. The good news is that all the Sunday Hock throwers are seniors, leaving LaClair an open field next year. The bad news is –next year won't be a typical Hock year. If there aren't at least a few 50' throwers (esp. from North and Mansfield) it is a problem. Where'd they all go?

8   LaClair, Zach JR No Attleborough     44-09.00

Total throwers = 42
