Without a doubt, the athletes' favorite part of this web-site is the pictures. I keep on snapping, and when I'm busy I hand the camera over to my wife or one of my athletes.

But my own favorite part is this column. Pretty hard to tell based on my recent sabatical! Knowing I didn't have the time to cover all the bases, I've intentionally let this part slide.

One of my diversions has been chasingTRADITION.com. I've written a number of articles, many of them involving time-consuming research. Its been fun but I'm near the end! I've got the end of one article to finish and probably one more to do.

But now that chasingTRADITION has run its course (pun intended) I should have more time.

Which brings me to Christmas. If you don't celebrate Christmas that's OK - just bear with me. I was just tired of hearing how un-PC it is to talk about it. This is really about helping out the economy (buying presents) and "good will to men".

Last year I published a guide to buying presents for the runner in your family. Some of the suggestions are already outdated and it may be too late to get a few of the suggestions. But now is as good a time as any to jog out and grab one more stocking stuffer. One of my suggestions from '04 might just be their favorite gift (you know how those runners are).

I'd love to tell you to give them a year's subscription to northrunning.com, but it wouldn't take them long to figure out it didn't cost you anything. I've been asked many times about when I'm going to start selling northrunning.com gear. The answer is, 9/1/08. That won't help you this year.

Now on to the "good will to men" part of it. This is the time of year to think of others. It's been a big year for giving to needy causes. From tsunami victims of a year ago to those affected by hurricane Katrina, there is always someone in need of a helping hand. Whether it is the person next door or someone half a world away - extend that hand in kindness.

Be thankful that we live in a great country and in a life of relative safety and ease. Be thankful that our problems often have solutions. Be thankful that we have the means and ability to choose to help others.

Within the Hockomock League, remember that our competition is striving to meet the same goals that we are. They have the same aspirations - the same dreams.

Compete fiercely, but in the end, look them in the eyes and shake their hand. It is only through the challenge they present to you, that you are able to fullfill your potential. Win or lose, they are the ones who help you find your best.

I hope everyone has a great holiday and good luck in '06.
