RECORD BREAKING PERFORMANCES

The weather steadily improved and so did the performances. Girls saw meet records fall in the 4 X 800 and Sprint Medley. In the 4 X 800 Masconomet ran to 9:37.30 to take a record set by Falmouth (9:39.0) in 1982. Then Lincoln-Sudbury broke their second meet record in two years. Last year they smashed the distance medley record. This year they broke host school North Attleboro's sprint medley record lowering the mark from 4:14.6 to 4:13.0. They seem to have taken very favorably to our track.

On the boys sideWestford Academy smashed the sprint medley record chopping four seconds off the old standard. Natick's record of 3:36.5 set in 1983 has now dropped to 3:32.5. Then Central Catholic capped off thier first place in the meet with an exclamation point 3:25.5 in the 4 X 400M. This eclipsed one of the longest standing records - 3:25.9 set by Framingham South in 1977.

North Attleboro broke school long jump records on both the girls and boys sides. The girls team of Kellyn Kearney, Leah Seward and Jen Deschenes broke a mark set in 1981. That year Jennifer Copley, Lynne Billingkoff and Lisa Herman jumped 47'1". With great jumps by all three (Kearney - 16'6, Seward - 16'.05" , and Deschenes 15'10) they established a new mark of 48'5.05". Jennifer Copley was there to watch her record broken - in fact measuring all the jumps of the day as a volunteer official.

The boys team also smashed the record led by a 21'+ jump by Marcus Vaughn. The old record was set in 1995 by Phil (PJ) Allessi, Christopher Deschenes and Ethan Estey. Two members of the team who's record was broken were on hand. Estey (officiating) and Allessi (coaching for Franklin). The third member is the brother of Jenn, thus a long jump record still remains in the family.

Besides Copley and Estey there was a large contingent of alumni on hand to help. Emily Estey was working the booth when it was announced that the state sprint medley record was broken - a record from 1997 she held with Kate Beith, Amy Shevchuk and Alisha Durant.

Other alumni workers were Jerry Espinosa (zone judge), Jason Gittle (discus marking), Amanda Childs (split times for girls) , Janet Pailes (triple jump), Vanessa Megna (triple jump), Darren Nixon (gate security), Emily Lane (assistant to the meet director), Linzi Calderone (assistant to the site director), and Cheryl Lyons (Awards).

Both the boys and girls improved from last year when both teams were 5th. This year the boys were third finishing just one half point out of second place (62.0 - 61.5). Just Central Catholic and Reading scored more points. The girls scored 39 points and were 4th.
