Boston Indoor Games '07
You never know who you're going to run into at a track meet. Here, Yale track alumni Laura O'Neill and Emily Estey Taylor run into each other at the Boston Indoor Games.
Coach Jim Hoar and Colleen Wetherbee before the races start. Colleen ran in the high school mile.
Past Olympian Mark Coogan prepares for the master's mile. He is now sponsored by New Balance.
Mark on his way to victory.
David Krummenacker (2003 World Indoor Champion) is a regular at this meet. He placed 3rd.
This year a new star has emerged from a little known D3 school, Willlamette. He recently ran a 3:56 mile and was the victor tonight at 1:48.
The high school girls wait their turn.
They were often distracted during the women's 5000M.
But when Tirunesh Dibaba was on a world record pace, they all focused on the race.
Ethiopian Dibaba like it at Reggie Lewis. This is the second time she has broken the world indoor 5K record on this track. Her last 200M of the 5K was 29 seconds!!
The high school mile is underway. Six runners dipped below the 5-minute mark. Wetherbee ran 5:00 for 8th place; another big step in her recovery from surgery in the fall.
Winner Danielle Tauro from Manahawkin, NJ was a crowd favorite. I was impressed with the way she engaged all the kids looking for an autograph. She signed countless programs and had questions for every fan. After going through the 800M in just over 2:30 she put on the jets to run a 4:52.
The high school mile included Matthew Centrowitz of Arnold, MD, the son of a past Olympian. He is wearing a white singlet. With two laps to go he made a bold move to the front and opened a lead, only to be passed on the straightaway by a runner that improved 5 seconds from 4:14 to 4:09. Matthew was 2nd in 4:11.
Shawn Crawford won the 60M dash. The 2004 gold medalist in the 200M is making a comeback after sub-par seasons in '05 and '06.
Shayne Culpepper wears a big smile after her second place in the mile.
Mile winner Sarah Jamieson set an Australian indoor national record.
Alan Webb (green-fastest ever high school miler and 2004 Olympian) and Chris Lukesic (Georgetown grad) are two of the favorites in the men's mile. They both live and train in the DC area.
Webb wins in a season PR 3:55.
Women get ready for the 3K. In the center is a past Massachusetts runner, Shalane Flanagan, who was a 2004 Olympian and is being inducted into the Massachusetts track athletes Hall of Fame this year. To her left is Kim Smith of New Zealand who was an NCAA XC champion for Providence College.
The start of the 3K.
High school miler Alex Kosinski of El Dorado, CA watches with interest - perhaps picturing a return in a few years.
Flanagan stays on the heels of Meseret Defar, outdoor world record holder in the 5K.
Flanagan sets a new US record, eclipsing the mark set by Regina Jacobs in 1999. Third place Kim Smith set the New Zealand record for this event.
A couple of tired competitors leave the track.
Alistar Craig (Ireland-orange) and Craig Mottram (Australia-green) waiting to be introduced for the men's 3K.
Mottran ran away from the pack in the last two laps to set the Austrailian record.
Mottran is interviewed by letsrun.com "brojos", Robert Johnson (in red-Cornell distance coach) and Weldon Johnson (far right).
